War is slavery. This thought entered my mind as I toured the Underground Railroad Museum in Cincinnati several years ago. Thus I appreciated Paul Oestreicher's comments. I wrote an article on this topic and named my blog - http://warisslavery.blogspot.com.

I'm a grandfather, retired business owner, and a military veteran (Army, infantry Viet Nam). My mantra is - If you have to hurt someone to solve a problem, you are the problem. I'm an abolitionists.

[...] Christians in Nigeria are facing severe violence, and a SCUPE alum, and former member of Ellis Avenue Church is in the front-lines of that struggle. Dr. Obed Dashan is the former principal of Gindiri Theological College in Plateau State, Nigeria. He and his wife Phena did their M.Div.s at the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Indiana and their doctoral studies at the Chicago Theological Seminary. They profess a deep Mennonite conviction and seek to live everyday as peacemakers which is a very difficult task in the context of Northern Nigeria. I wrote about them in a previous post.
Thanks to Shanta Premawardhana for posting this!

As a biographer of Jane Addams, I was of course especially saddened by the news of Hull House's closing. But I also was mindful of the differences between the kind of settlement house Hull House was when Addams was alive versus what it became. I exploreda few of those differences in a piece I wrote for The Nation magazine's website: http://www.thenation.com/article/165848/chicagos-hull-house-closes-its-doors-time-revive-settlement-model.

Addams did not wish any other institution to control Hull House's freedom to be responsive to the interests and desires of the community. In her day, that meant refusing the offer of the University of Chicago to absorb Hull House and refusing the funds of the Community Chest (later the United Way). As much as she valued freedom of speech for all (she was a founding board member of the ACLU), she valued freedom of action for all the volunteers of Hull House, including herself. She also had too much respect for the citizens of Chicago she lived among to put the provision of services (which creates a lopsided kind of relationship) at the center of Hull House's purposes.
